Bhringraj, or sometimes called maka (eclipta alba) is an ancient ayurvedic herb. It comes from the plant known as bhangra in India and is widely used to balance one’s Kapha and Vata.
In ayurvedic personal care practices, bhringraj is used to combat hair loss and graying. Here’s how I use it:
How to Make a Bhringraj Hair Masque
- Mix 2 parts bhringraj powder with 1 part amla powder (or sometimes called brami) with lukewarm water to make a paste.
- Apply to a full length of hair. Rinse well.
How to Make a Bhringraj Oil Infusion
- Pour 1 tablespoon of dried bhringraj into a glass bottle or container.
- Warm 1 cup of coconut oil, sesame oil, or olive oil in a saucepan on low heat.
- Pour the warm oil into the glass container over the bhringraj.
- Store in a dark, cool (not cold) place for 5 days.
- Strain the herbs from the oil, and apply the oil to strands and scalp. Rinse well.
- Continue to store unused oil in a cool, dark area. Use within two weeks.
How to Make a Bhringraj Hair Tea
- Add 1 tablespoon of dried bhringraj to 1 cup of boiling water, and steep for 10 minutes.
- Once cool, strain away the herbs, and pour the tea over the hair and scalp.
- Rinse immediately.
Note that while ayurvedic herbs are all natural, some of them really pack a punch. I wouldn’t recommend leaving any of these treatments in for an extended period of time, as they can be very drying.
Many Indian markets sell bhringraj powder. Bhringraj and other ayurvedic herbs can also be purchased online.
